HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SOFA FOR YOUR SPACE
START WITH FUNCTION
First consider the function of the space the sofa will be placed in. Some things to consider are:
What is the purpose of the sofa in the space you need it for? Is it for comfort, décor, or another function such as to double as an extra sofa bed for visitors?
How many people will be using the space at any one time?
What activities will take place in the chosen room?
Do those activities require or have any other large pieces of furniture such as a desk or dining table?
Are there any restrictions, for instance the room layout, size, or windows, doors, and radiators to avoid?
This should give you an idea of the general layout of the room and how the space will become functional, helping you make decisions like the colour, style and type of material you’d like your sofa to be made from. If your room is designed to be a playroom or you have children for example, you may want to opt for a darker coloured leather sofa instead of a light coloured fabric sofa.
CHECK FOR SIZE AND CHECK AGAIN
Having the sofa the correct size can make or break a room. A large sofa can suffocate a small room by making it feel even smaller. So, how can we prevent this?
Use the two thirds rule – you can work out the correct size by measuring the wall parallel to where you’d like to place the sofa. For example, if your wall is roughly 240cm the Chicago 2 seater would prove perfect. However, if you wall is longer around: 270cm or more the Chicago 3 seater would work better.
If you’re buying for a smaller room, it’s a good idea to consider depth, which will determine how far out into the room the sofa will go. For a smaller room you may want to choose from our Darcy or Harper collection as the depth is only 89cm.
Once you have an idea of which sofa you may want to buy it’s a good idea to place it into your space before you buy. How do you do this? Using masking tape, measure out the dimensions of the sofa so you can see accurately how much space will be left to walk around the sofa once it arrives. This will also give you a strong indication on how easily the sofa will blend into your space, showing you how much room you’ll have to open doors and place other furniture.
Finally, don’t forget to consider the height, especially if you have low shelving in the chosen space.
COLOUR COLOUR COLOUR
The colour of your sofa will determine how much of a presence it commands in the room. A sofa can blend seamlessly into its surroundings or stand out boldly and make a statement. Once you’ve established the function and space that your sofa will be in, it’s time to think about your colour scheme.
If you don’t already have a defined colour scheme a good place to start is the colour of your curtains and flooring. If you have earthy tones like brown or warm beige in your colour scheme, a green sofa like our Harper Two Seater in Forest Green will add to the natural feel. However, if you are going for a brighter more modern and ‘clean’ feel, the neutral tone of the Dacy Corner Sofa in Light Grey would work perfectly.
So, to recap, make sure you are clear on the function of your sofa, measure carefully for size and then consider your choice of colour. Since our sofas are built to last this is an important decision, but following this guide should help you find your perfect sofa first time.
