BUYING AN EX DISPLAY SOFA?
ADVANTAGES
DISCOUNTED PRICE
This is the only advantage of buying an ex display sofa. Most retailers will mark down ex display sofas by 50% or sometimes by even higher discounts. Why do they do this? Because they need the space in the showroom to displays and sell sofas from a new collection or season. If the discounted display sofa is in good condition, do pick it up. If you like it and the price is right, there’s no reason why it can be a smart purchase!
But, before you do, take a look at our new sofa catalogs at Abakus Direct. Our prices will amaze you. Remember, these are brand new sofas with a 5 year warranty and free delivery to anywhere in mainland UK.

DISADVANTAGES
WEAR AND TEAR
Unlike a brand new sofa, an ex-display sofa is going to have some signs of wear and tear. A loose thread here and there, one cushion that is slightly more flattened than the others or some other minor or obvious defect that your eye will pick up on almost immediately. You can’t really try to bargain down the price using these defects as leverage either, since the sofa’s price is already marked down. Even if the price is a really good bargain, it never feels right to take home a sofa that already has some signs of wear and tear. Also, sofas kept in showrooms are constantly exposed to natural sunlight which makes them fade with time. This is particularly true of ex display leather sofas, if they haven’t sold in a long time.
PRICE IS TRICKY
Retailers who try to sell ex display sofas will mark down the sofa from its full retail price. But, what you have to know is that sofas are rarely sold at full retail prices. There’s always some sort of sale on them even when they are not ex display sofas. For example, a sofa’s full retail price might cost £1,000. Even when it’s a new addition to a store, they might sell it for £800 with a 20% discount. But, when they try to sell it as an ex-display sofa, they will mark it down from the full £1,000 price and not the £800 true price. This leaves you paying more than what you should for an ex display sofa.
LIMITED CHOICES
Perhaps one of the biggest disadvantages of buying an ex display sofa is the fact that you have to pick and choose from what’s available. Whether you are shopping stores like Harvey’s, DFS or even premium brands like Collins and Hayes, you are going to have just a handful of sofas to pick from. When it comes to a sofa, you want to pick a sofa that complements your home. The last thing you want is to pick up a sofa because of its bargain price only to then have to change your home’s décor to make that sofa fit in.
At Abakus Direct, every one of our sofas are available in a wide range of colours and shades.
YOU CAN’T MAKE SETS
Another big disadvantage of buying an ex-display sofa is that you will never be able to expand your sofa suite if you want to. For example, you might think an ex display corner sofa is a great bargain. But, what if you wanted to add an armchair or two seater a few months down the road. Ex-display sofas are usually permanently discontinued and you will never be able to make a suite out of it.
At Abakus Direct however, we have our sofas in every configuration possible. With great value prices, you can buy your whole sofa suite at one go, and still pay very ex display sofa prices!
DELIVERIES CAN COST MORE
Showroom staff can be a little snooty when you are trying to buy an ex display sofa off them. Since they don’t want the sofas, the whole customer service experience will often be a little below par if you express an interest to buy an ex display sofa. Delivery will often cost extra and it can sometimes be quite steep, amounting to almost £100 depending on where you live. £100 can quickly make the ex-display sofa less appealing to you.
