SECOND HAND CORNER SOFA? WHY, WHEN NEW IS AFFORDABLE!
Are you in the market for a second hand corner sofa? It’s a smart decision, considering that a corner sofa offers the most value for money of all the sofa types out there. There simply is more seating space and just one corner sofa can nicely fill up a living room, without leaving it looking barren. And, buying it second hand obviously means that you can save quite a bit of money. But, before you go out on sites like Gumtree and Preloved to start browsing for second hand corner sofas, we at Abakus Direct invite you to take a look at our brand new corner sofas, sofas we sell for incredible prices.
Why buying a second hand corner sofa isn’t always going to pay off?
PRICES AREN’T EXACTLY CHEAP
We took a look at sites like Gumtree, Preloved and others to see how cheap second hand corner sofas were. The results were quite surprising. The average second hand corner sofa isn’t exactly cheap. We would say that the top 50 listings at a site like Gumtree averages out to a price of £450 or so. Sure, there were some cheap corner sofas for as little as £80, but they were worn out, faded and possibly with many other defects that you can’t really tell by looking at a photo.
Also, you must remember that whoever sells you a used sofa is not going to deliver it to your home. This means you will have to either hire a truck or maybe use a truck that you have to get help and then bring it to your home. This is going to cost you time and money, technically driving up the cost of your second hand sofa purchase. Proximity is always a problem. When you do like a second hand corner sofa, it’s almost always 100 kms away!
HYGIENE ISSUES
You just don’t know what a second hand corner sofa has been through in its original home. It might look OK on an online ad but a closer inspection might reveal a lot of stains and spills. If the previous owners have had pets like cats or dogs, you will have to think about possible allergens caught in the fabric of the sofa, if you have allergies. Old sofas also smell funky. There’s no denying it. If you do pick up a used sofa, we recommend that you give it a good cleaning. We wrote a post on how to clean a fabric sofa if you need some tips.
POTENTIAL FRAME DAMAGE
When a sofa’s frame breaks, it’s usually the end of a sofa’s life. But, it’s very common for people who sell used sofas to get a handyman to fix up their broken sofas with temporary carpentry, to then quickly put it up for sale. When you visually inspect the sofa or even try a sit on it, it might seem just fine. Bring it home and begin to use it every day and you might one day hear a pop or creak and it can all go downhill from there.
NO RETURNS, EXCHANGES OR REFUNDS
Once you exchange money for a used corner sofa, the deal’s over. It’s almost unheard of for used sofa sellers to give you a refund on your sofa, even if you just ask for a partial one, after you discover a problem with it. You can’t really do anything about it either, as it is understood that you bought the sofa in an “as is” condition.
