Six Styling Tips for Smaller Spaces
Styling for a smaller space can be a challenge, you don’t want to end up making your living space feel smaller with poor décor choices. These design tips will allow you to decorate with flare and personality despite being tight on space.
1. Mirror Mirror on the Wall
Strategically placed mirrors can be a great way to deceive the eye into thinking a room is larger than it is. They are also a great way to make a space brighter, creating an airy and more spacious feel.
2. Room for Rugs
In open plan spaces or studio apartments, use area rugs to separate out the different spaces. Rugs don’t take up a room, unlike other area dividers. This will create the illusion of different rooms, while still allowing you to make the most of your space.
3. Lighting… also on the Wall
Another space-saving tip is to choose lighting fixtures that can be attached to the walls or hung from ceilings. This way you save floor space without missing out on the perfect lighting set up. The placing of lights, as for any room, is also important. Make sure lighting illuminates the whole room as leaving dingy corners will make the space feel smaller.
4. Colourful is Okay
Don’t shy away from bright colours and fun décor that shows personality. It’s a misconception that a small space must be left bare and plain. Express your style with your favourite colours and patterns.
5. Float Your Furniture
Although you may be limited on space, don’t always be tempted to push all furniture up to the wall. ‘Floating’ your furniture in a room can give the illusion of a larger space.
6. The Best Sofa
One of the most important aspects of any living space is the sofa. Don’t drown your room with a sofa that is too large. But, at the same time, it can make a great focal point for the room, so choosing a sofa that stands out can be great for a smaller space. At Abakus Direct we have hundreds of affordable sofas to choose from, and with many different styles and sizes you are sure to find the perfect sofa for your smaller space.
